The Haunting of Hill House received critical acclaim, particularly for its acting, directing, and production values. A follow-up series by Flanagan titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, with most of the same crew and some of the same cast but a different story and characters, was released on October 9, 2020. In contrast to the upcoming second season outing’s Henry James-inspired content, 2018’s inaugural anthology outing, The Haunting of Hill House, was a VERY loose adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s classic horror novel of the same name. That season of the show followed the Crain family and their experiences at the titular Hill House and how the trauma of living with ghosts (literal and figurative,) affects their lives as adults. The show will reinvent itself next year as it tackles another haunted house classic, the Henry James novella The Turn of the Screw. He couldn’t say much of anything, but did say next season will continue Flanagan’s tradition of marrying horror and heart.

Later in their stay, the doctor's wife, the haughty Mrs. Montague, and her companion Arthur Parker, the headmaster of a boys' school, arrive to spend a weekend at Hill House and help investigate it. They, too, are interested in the supernatural, including séances and spirit writing. Unlike the other four characters, they do not experience anything supernatural, although some of Mrs. Montague's alleged spirit writings seem to communicate with Eleanor.

In Hush, Flanagan's 2016 movie, a masked killer stalks author Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) in her remote home. The book also shows up in the Netflix movie Gerald's Game, which Flanagan directed. Looks like Netflix is becoming the new site of the Mike Flanagan horror universe, and we can't wait to be scared. Production on Flanagan's next Netflix horror series, Midnight Mass, began in August. Midnight Mass will feature two Haunting regulars–Henry Thomas and Kate Siegel, who happens to be Flanagan's wife. While Bly Manor and Hill House both feature ghosts (lots of 'em, in fact), the shows are as concerned with exploring what ghosts represent as creating jump scares.
